Protected trees and nesting birds

Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas

Much of central Harrogate, including the streets around the Stray, and Knaresborough's old town are conservation areas. Work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs consent from North Yorkshire Council. In a conservation area you must usually give the council six weeks' notice before cutting or removing a tree. Ask the tree surgeon to check this when they quote.

Bird nesting season

Active nests are protected by law. Most nesting happens between March and August, so major cutting is often best planned for autumn and winter. A tree surgeon will check for nests before starting at any time of year.

Questions

Common questions

Who will do the work?

Nidd Tree Surgery puts you in touch with an independent tree surgeon who works in Harrogate and Knaresborough. They visit, quote and carry out the work, and you pay them directly. As with any trader, ask to see their insurance and qualifications before work starts.

How quickly can someone come out?

For a quote, usually within a few working days. For storm damage or a tree that is unsafe, call rather than using the form.

Do I need permission to cut down my tree?

Only if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or you live in a conservation area. The tree surgeon can check this and help with the application or notice.

Is the waste taken away?

Most tree surgeons chip branches on site and take them away, or leave the wood and chippings if you want them. Check this is included when you get your quote.

Can I cut back branches from my neighbour's tree?

You can usually cut branches that overhang your boundary, back to the boundary line, unless the tree is protected. The branches belong to your neighbour, so it's polite to offer them back.
