The options

Which kind of pruning do you need?

Crown reduction

Reduces the overall height and spread of the tree by cutting branches back to suitable growth points. Useful when a tree has outgrown its space.

Crown thinning

Removes a proportion of smaller branches inside the crown to let more light through and reduce wind resistance, without changing the tree's size much.

Crown lifting

Removes the lowest branches to give clearance over a drive, path, lawn or road.

Deadwooding

Takes out dead or broken branches that could fall, which matters most over paths, cars and play areas.

Prices

What pruning costs

A typical UK range for crown reduction or pruning is £200 – £1,000, depending on the size of the tree, how much is removed and how easy it is to reach. Always get a written quote first.

Questions

Common questions

Who will do the work?

Nidd Tree Surgery puts you in touch with an independent tree surgeon who works in Harrogate and Knaresborough. They visit, quote and carry out the work, and you pay them directly. As with any trader, ask to see their insurance and qualifications before work starts.

When is the best time to prune?

Many trees are best pruned in late autumn and winter when they are dormant and birds are not nesting. Some, such as cherries and other stone fruit trees, are usually pruned in summer. The tree surgeon will advise for your tree.

Will pruning harm the tree?

Done properly, no. Good practice is to make clean cuts at suitable points and not remove too much at once. Ask your tree surgeon how much they plan to take off.

Is my tree protected?

If it has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area, pruning needs consent or notice from North Yorkshire Council. The tree surgeon can check before quoting.
