How it works
Grinding versus digging out
Stump grinding
A grinding machine with a toothed wheel cuts the stump into chippings, usually down to several inches below the surface. The main roots are left to rot naturally. It is quick and causes little damage to the surrounding garden.
Full stump removal
Digging out the whole stump and root plate is sometimes needed before building work. It is slower, more disruptive and usually costs more. Mention it in your enquiry if you need it.
Prices
What stump grinding costs
A typical UK range is £50 – £300 per stump, depending on its width, access for the machine and how many stumps there are. Several stumps in one visit often work out cheaper each. Always get a written quote first.
Before work starts
Protected trees and nesting birds
Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas
Work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs consent from North Yorkshire Council. In a conservation area you must usually give the council six weeks' notice before cutting or removing a tree. Ask the tree surgeon to check this when they quote.
Bird nesting season
Active nests are protected by law. Most nesting happens between March and August, so major cutting is often best planned for autumn and winter.
Questions
Common questions
Who will do the work?
Nidd Tree Surgery puts you in touch with an independent tree surgeon who works in Harrogate and Knaresborough. They visit, quote and carry out the work, and you pay them directly. As with any trader, ask to see their insurance and qualifications before work starts.
Will the grinder fit into my garden?
Many stump grinders are narrow enough to fit through a standard garden gate. Mention any steps, narrow paths or slopes so the tree surgeon brings the right machine.
Can I plant in the same spot?
After grinding you can lay turf or plant small things fairly soon. For a new tree, it is better to plant a little to one side, as old roots take time to break down.
What happens to the chippings?
They can be left as mulch for your borders or taken away. Check which is included in your quote.
