What's involved

Trimming versus reducing

Regular trimming

Cutting back the sides and top to keep a hedge neat. Most hedges look best with a trim once or twice a year.

Height and width reduction

Taking a tall, overgrown hedge down by a metre or more. This is heavier work, often done from a platform or scaffold, and creates far more waste. Note that leylandii does not regrow from bare brown wood, so it should not be cut back too hard.

Prices

What hedge trimming costs

A typical UK range is £100 – £500, depending on the length and height of the hedge and how much waste there is. Big reductions can cost more. Always get a written quote first.

Before work starts

Protected trees and nesting birds

Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas

Work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs consent from North Yorkshire Council. In a conservation area you must usually give the council six weeks' notice before cutting or removing a tree. Ask the tree surgeon to check this when they quote.

Bird nesting season

Active nests are protected by law. Most nesting happens between March and August, so major cutting is often best planned for autumn and winter.

Questions

Common questions

Who will do the work?

Nidd Tree Surgery puts you in touch with an independent tree surgeon who works in Harrogate and Knaresborough. They visit, quote and carry out the work, and you pay them directly. As with any trader, ask to see their insurance and qualifications before work starts.

When can hedges be cut?

Hedges can be trimmed at any time, but birds often nest in hedges between March and August and active nests are protected. Check carefully before cutting in that period, or wait until autumn.

My neighbour's hedge is too tall. What can I do?

Try talking to your neighbour first. If that fails, North Yorkshire Council can look at complaints about high evergreen hedges under the high hedges rules, usually for a fee.

Do you take the cuttings away?

Most tree surgeons clear and remove the cuttings. Check it is included in your quote.
