How it's done
Felling or taking it down in sections
Straight felling
If there is a clear, safe drop zone, the tree can be cut at the base and felled in one piece, then cut up on the ground. It is the quickest and usually the cheapest way to remove a tree.
Sectional dismantling
In most Harrogate gardens there are houses, walls, greenhouses or power lines in the way. The tree surgeon climbs or uses a platform and removes the tree piece by piece, lowering heavy sections on ropes. It takes longer, which is why it costs more.

Questions
Common questions
Who will do the work?
Nidd Tree Surgery puts you in touch with an independent tree surgeon who works in Harrogate and Knaresborough. They visit, quote and carry out the work, and you pay them directly. As with any trader, ask to see their insurance and qualifications before work starts.
Do I need permission to remove a tree?
Only if it has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, such as much of central Harrogate and Knaresborough's old town. For a protected tree you need consent from North Yorkshire Council; in a conservation area you usually give six weeks' notice. The tree surgeon can check this when they quote.
Can a tree be removed during nesting season?
Yes, but active nests are protected by law, so the tree surgeon will check first and may need to wait if birds are nesting. Most nesting happens between March and August.
What happens to the stump?
It is normally cut close to the ground. If you want to plant, turf or build over the spot, ask for the stump to be ground out as well.
